TO DETERMINE WIRE SIZE ON UNWOUND SPRING
STEP 1: CAREFULLY COUNT 20 COILS AND MEASURE TO THE NEAREST 1/16". THEN DIVIDE THIS NUMBER BY 20 TO DETERMINE YOUR WIRE SIZE. STANDARD WIRE SIZES ARE .192, .207, .218, .225, .234, .243, .250, .262.
STEP 2: THE NEXT THING TO DO IS MEASURE THE LENGTH OF AN UNWOUND SPRING ***COUNTING COILS AND MEASURING WOUND SPRINGS, SPRINGS WITH TENSION, TO DETERMINE SPRING WIRE SIZE WILL PROVIDE FALSE DATA***
STEP 3: DETERMINE THE INSIDE DIAMETER OF THE SPRING.(STANDARD INSIDE DIAMETERS ARE 1 3/4" AND 2")
IF YOU HAVE 1 3/4" ID SPRINGS, CONTACT US WITH WIRE SIZE AND LENGTH SO WE CAN RECOMMEND CORRESPONDING 2" SPRING.
CRAWFORD SPRINGS ARE 1 19/32" (WHEN REPLACING THESE WITH STANDARD TORSION SPRINGS THEY REQUIRE USE OF 4" DRUMS)
For your information:
On standard lift doors, 12" and 15" radius track, where the cable winds up from behind the drum, the right wound spring will have a red winding cone and will be mounted with the red winding cone pointing towards the LEFT side of the door from inside looking out. The left wound spring will have a black winding cone and will be mounted with the Black winding cone pointing towards the RIGHT side of the door from inside looking out.
